  • Greetings,

Looks like the weather god heard about my comment in last week's newsletter. It will be bright and sunny, WITH NO WIND, this weekend. So get out and ride.

The formal Oct 21st kick-off event is cancelled. Once again, the logistics of event planning bite us. Venues want at least a couple months notice of cancellation so they have time to re-book the facility. With only six weeks to plan this event, and the low initial response to my announcement, I have cancelled the festivities rather than risk having to spend over $500 even if only a dozen people show up. Oh, the growing pains of a small business.

We will join the normally scheduled Oct 21st RMCC ride. It is an "out and back" so people can turn back at various points depending upon their ability. Afterwards, if anyone is interested, we can grab lunch at Panera Bread to discuss the program and meet other riders. I'll refund today for those who have already registered.

I appreciate everyones patience with this project. If group cycling training was easy then someone would already have a good model and there would be no need for Midlife Cycling. I believe fitness companies, like Midlife Cycling, need to find alternatives to the traditional health club/personal trainer/email coaching techniques and that the athletes need to embrace new technologies that allow them to receive training at their convenience.

    Have a great week.

Saturday, September 30th - the normal RMCC ride will meet at Pine Junction. There are many of us who do not have the time to drive all the way up there to ride. So Dan and I will be starting an alternative ride out of the normal Northglenn Park & Ride at 8:45 am. Meet corner of 120th Ave and Huron. We will do the Northglenn-Hudson ride. This is relatively flat and about 50 miles.

Sunday, October 1st - ride start times change to 9:45 am.

Saturday, October 21st - Littleton Park & Ride at Santa Fe & Mineral - 9:45 am. As I mentioned this is a scheduled ride with RMCC. Suggested turn-around ppoints are Deer Creek Canyon & Waterton Rd, Philipsburg (half way up Deer Creek Cyn), top of Deer CCreek Canyon, and Tiny Town.

    Clothing

We've already had a preview of the coming cold weather. I just received a new long leg cycling bib from Performance Bike. It has Goretex panels in the front and is fleece lined. Should keep me toasty warm this winter.

I know others who wear bib shorts/knickers for normal riding. I've never had problems with my cycling pants. However, the long pants that I put over my shorts move during a ride which is really annoying. While some others put the cycling short on over the long pants, that pretty much commits you to wearing them the entire ride unless you find somewhere to change.

Other items to consider are shoe covers and long fingered cycling gloves. A lot of these items are on sale right now so don't wait until the dead of winter when shop owners can keep regular prices.

    Food and Nutrition
    Food

Nothing new in the food department this week. For review, try to consume around 400 cal/hr on the bike. Start reducing your off-bike food consumption as the rides get shorter. And, forget diets. Just eat sensibly and keep portions reasonable (i.e. 6 oz lean protein, 4 oz veggie, 4 oz starch). And have a small desert to shut down your appetite after the meal.

    Wines

Enjoyed a nice wine at dinner the other night. It was a special event so we spent more than the normal $10-15 a bottle that I normally look for.

The 2002 Jordan Cabernet Sauvingnon Alexander Valley is a full-bodied wine tasting of blackberry, cherry, and cassis. It is really a Meritage because of the Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cab Franc blend. But marketing runs the planet and I'm sure it sells better as a Cabernet Sauvingnon. The Bordeaux description can be given only to those wines from that specific region in France. Meritage is the name given to similar blends outside of the region.

We paid $60 in the restaurant and it retails for around $40 in liquor stores.

    Getting Started CD

Pick up the "Getting Started" CD to learn all the fundamental information you need to do long endurance rides with us. Amazing how many people have basic problems on the road when we have used a system for years that prevents most of that.
