"...I realize that all the other people are much more
experienced than I am, and am hopeful that you and Dan won't give up on me -
till I can "cut the mustard!"
As I replied to this person, the
Intermediate Training Group is a safe environment for learning. I like to
see a competitive spirit in people because it provides the driving force behind
your training motivation. However, whether you are first or last to the
top of the hill we will wait until everyone regroups.
The focus for
October is "just ride, dammit!" The goal is to make a commitment to
regular riding, become familiar with the group, work out all the
popping/stiffness in your joints, and just have fun rediscovering the
bike.
If you are a faster, more experienced rider, here are some things
you can do:
- ride sweep for the group - alternate between the first and
last person to keep the group intact - this will almost double your mileage for
the ride and satisfy your hunger for speed.
- increase your cadence - one
of our members can pedal at 160 rpm - track sprinters are capable of 200+.
Try 25 miles at 130 rpm and you won't be bored. (I've been told Lance
typically does six hours at 136 rpm during his winter training).
- mentor
someone during the ride and put in your extra speed/distance work
afterwards.
You need to get started riding NOW! Aging and loss of
conditioning won't wait until you find time in your schedule to
exercise.
