  • Greetings,

Another busy week and late newsletter. But this really is the essence of Midlife Cycling. I'm not just another exercise "expert" dreaming up nice theories about how to get you to exercise. I too AM a busy person who has no time to exercise and really do understand the time pressures you are facing.

I have been trying since November to develop a set of audio CDs and DVDs to help you train. We tried the seminars and clinics but it is difficult to find the time to organize and promote them. So you can see with two companies, one philanthropic organization, one church, and family with a 2-year old that I literally don't have time to get "mandatory" things done let alone have any spare time. Yet I am still a cyclist.

How you live your life really is a choice. No matter how important you think things are you can still stop doing them if you want. Have you ever thought about what would happen if you died? Not a pleasant thought. But most things you are involved in would somehow continue. Even your family would find a way to keep going.

Without my health I can't do anything. Without stamina I wouldn't be able to do all the things I do now. All I ask of my family is that I be allowed to ride for 4-6 hours one day of the weekend. Do you think that is too much to expect if it will keep me alive and healthy now and into my senior years?

    On The Road
    Climb

Just a fantastic ride last Saturday. The group stayed together and managed their energy well. Most people were talking normally during the long climb up Mt Vernon Canyon. Some went short. But that is better than falling into survival mode. Riding exhausted is not good training.

I'm going to stop the 1 pm Sunday rides. I am unable to be there every weekend and nobody has offered to lead the rides in my absence. Also, many of our Populaires and Brevets fall on a Sunday. So, while I get my one long ride, I have to schedule my second warm-up or recovery ride around my other family and charitable activities.

However, if anyone else has some flexibility on the weekend and can make plans at the last minute via e- mail then I would be open to riding with a small group of 6-8 other people. I think it is something that will have to fall together naturally just as the original Paceline Group was formed.

    Indoor Workouts
    RevMaster

My Monday workout was cancelled due to a meeting and my Wednesday workout consisted of eating a steak and shrimp dinner with two beers. I'm just at the point where I really want to get away from the repetition of the gym and put miles on the bike.

However, I am still doing my core exercises and riding my indoor bike on an irregular basis. Whenever I can pop off a few step ups, lunges, crunches, pull-ups or other routine then I do it. I might exercise a dozen different times during the day i.e. crunches and pushups when I wake up, pull-ups anytime I wander by the closet bar, step-ups any time I'm near stairs or a curb, and indoor cycling even if it is only for 15 minutes. Remember, our philosophy is that ANY exercise is better than NO exercise.

    Food and Nutrition
    Food

Other than working on a new steak and shrimp nutrition bar I have my products and just need to see what my body wants when I ride. If you do nothing else you should bring a bottle of Cytomax, another bottle or camelback of plain water and a few gel shots. You will pick up tips along the way and I will try to give my nutrition seminar again.

    Classroom...

Speaking of seminars...I have one group of ladies who wanted a Women's Only Bike Maintenance clinic. They got a group of 8-10 ladies together. We agreed to do it over at someone's house to eliminate the venue scheduling problem. If you are interested in doing something like that then let me know. It is a lot easier for me to just show up than to have to schedule, and pay, for a room 3 months in advance and then try to recruit enough people to make it worth the time. Check out the free papers and I'll try to get more up on the site soon.

Someone from Texas actually bought a clamp-on bike bottle from the Bargain section of the store. As I mentioned before, it is a great place to put old or spare cycling items that you have laying around the house gathering dust. Send me a picture, description, and desired price and I'll put the item in the store for free. If it sells then I will take a small fee. You never know what will happen. May stay on your shelf forever or someone out there may need it.
